VMware was just starting to gain traction when RELDATA went to the drawing board for the RELvos™ Unified Storage Engine architecture. It was clear that the future of computing lay in virtualization while the future of storage was iSCSI. For instance, when you log into VMware’s vSphere for an ESX Server it only connects to LUNs for block storage and NFS for file storage. The former is used for production volumes and the latter is used for backup and restoration of virtual machine images.
